GEITA: GEITA Gold Mine Limited has joined environmentalists in the global campaign against plastic pollution heading to World Environment Day on June 5, 2025.

World Environment Day, a global observance led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is being marked across Tanzania with activities highlighting this year’s theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

In Geita, the commemorations have brought together government institutions, education stakeholders, civil society, and the private sector in a coordinated series of activities aimed at raising awareness and encouraging public participation in environmental stewardship.

For this year, the week-long programme towards the climax of World Environment Day on 5th June 2025, is being implemented by GGML in collaboration with the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) and local authorities,  whose support has enabled several activations involving schools and market communities. The focus is on inclusive community engagement and education around sustainable  plastic use and waste management.

According to GGML’s Environmental Manager, Mr Yusuph Mhando, structured learning activities are being carried out in primary schools across Nyakabale, Nyamalembo, Manga, and Mgusu, with the aim of introducing environmental concepts to learners at an early stage. Alongside these, a radio panel discussion hosted on Storm FM is convening environmental experts, local officials, and civic voices to reflect on community-based approaches to climate resilience.

He said that the programme also includes a public awareness walk and clean-up through the Nyankumbu Market area, targeting traders and residents with practical messages on environmental hygiene and proper plastic use and disposal. On June 5, students will participate in a debate at Kasamwa Secondary School focusing on the sustainable elimination of plastic pollution and local environmental challenges.

These activities form part of broader national efforts to align with international frameworks on climate and environmental action. They also continue local momentum from previous interventions, such as the 2024 delivery of a water supply system in Nyakabale and the provision of waste management equipment to municipal authorities, which were supported through public-private collaboration.

This year’s engagements mark 25 years of GGML’s operations in Geita and reflect an ongoing contribution to environmental education and community partnerships in support of sustainable development.
